Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by his grandmother.
His mother, Elizabeth, joined them when he was 10. Elizabeth Harriet Montgomery Jackson, the mother of actor Samuel L. Jackson, died Oct. 23 2012 in Rome, Ga., after a long struggle with Alzheimers.

He attended his tertiary education at Morehouse College and majored in marine biology before switching to studying acting.
Samuel L. Jackson graduated from Morehouse College in 1972 and then started his acting career on stage.
After attending college, Jackson joined the Black Image Theatre Company with his future wife (they were not married by that time), LaTanya Richardson.
He met LaTanya Richardson at Morehouse’s sister school, Spelman College.
They together toured the country and performed skits characterized by a fiery combination of rage and humour to primarily white audiences.
In the year 1976, Jackson moved with Richardson to Harlem, New York City, to pursue an acting career.
Jackson and Richardson got married in 1980. They have a daughter who is named Zoe.
Samuel made his film debut in the 1972 independent feature “Together for Days.”This is a blaxploitation movie about the relationship between a white woman and a black radical, but he did not achieve stardom until his role in Quentin Tarantino’s breakout 1994 crime drama “Pulp Fiction.
